Girls Basketball was one of the first sports added when VHTPA joined CIF Los Angeles City Section in 2004. Since those early years of playing in the Marine league VHTPA has developed into a competitive force in the CIF Los Angeles City Section. Girls basketball went on to win the Crosstown League in 2008, reach the semi-finals in 2009 and host their own tournament for several years. In 2018 girls basketball was moved to D3 after reaching the semi-finals and to D2 in 2019. Every year VHTPA has reached the playoffs through molding raw talent to maturity with quality coaching, primal workouts and developing a true love of the sport.
Head Coach Louis Nelson Sr.
Coach Nelson has been with VHTPA since 2016. He started his basketball player career winning Back-to-Back CIF Championships at Compton High School with a record of 66-0. He played basketball at the University of Washington. As a collegiate athlete he was All League two years in a row, All American, All Pac 8, All District and All West Coast. He was drafted by the Washington Bullets and played professional basketball for seven years with the Washington Bullets, New Orleans Jazz, San Antonio Spurs and the New Jersey Nets. As a player he is in Compton High School’s Hall of Fame. As a girls basketball coach he has won over 500 games and is in the CIF City Section Hall of Fame.
